From Clay to Creation — Guided Wheel Throwing for Beginners
No experience needed | Small groups

4, 11, 18, 25 September (6:00pm –8:00pm)
2, 9 October (6:00pm –8:00pm)
🕒 2–2.5 hrs per session | Group size: 2 participants
Includes all materials, glazing & firing
What You’ll Do Week by Week
Week 1 – First Touch
Welcome to the studio!
• Intro to space, materials & safety
• Preparing clay: wedging technique 1
• Feeling the clay on the wheel — first centring steps
• Make 1–2 simple shapes (e.g. cup or tumbler)
Week 2 – Finding Form
• Wedging technique #2
• Intro to trimming basics
• Trim first piece
• Throw a new form — perhaps your first plate
Focus: confidence at the wheel & finishing work
Week 3 – Details Matter
• Prepare and wedge clay
• Trim previous pieces
• Learn tools for carving and shaping footrings
• Create a new piece — try a cup or tea bowl
Focus: footwork & working cleanly
Week 4 – Handles & Bowls
• Wedging & trimming
• Learn to pull and attach handles
• Throw and shape a bowl or handled mug
Focus: adding function and detail
Week 5 – Height & Decoration
• Practice tall forms — e.g. cylinder or vase
• Surface decoration with studio tools
• Refine trimming and symmetry
Focus: structure and creativity
Week 6 – Glaze & Celebrate
• Choose your glazes and decorate your fired pieces
• Final Q&A, tips for future practice
• Mini group show with prosecco, tea & snacks
Focus: pride in process & joyful closure
