Firing Guidelines

These guidelines apply to all firing services at the studio.
Please read them carefully before booking a firing.

Our aim is to ensure safe kiln operation, protect shared equipment, and maintain a fair working environment for everyone.

  • All standard firing options listed online are high-temperature firings.
Low-temperature firings are not available for online booking and must be approved in advance.

The studio reserves the right to refuse work that is not suitable for our firing range or materials.

  • We fire work for:

    • Studio members

    • Visiting makers using our firing services

All work must be made independently and be suitable for electric kiln firing.

The studio reserves the right to refuse work that does not meet these guidelines.

  • Single item firing

Single item firing is for one individual ceramic piece.

    This option is suitable for:

    • mugs

    • small bowls

    • cups

    • similar standalone items

The price covers standard high-temperature bisque or glaze firing for one piece.

If your item is significantly smaller, any overpayment will be credited towards your next firing.
If your item is larger than average, a price adjustment may apply.

Final size assessment is done by the studio.

  • Shelf firing is for multiple pieces fired together or larger work that requires more space.

    This option is suitable for:

    • several items fired as a group

    • larger bowls, plates, or vessels

    • sets or batches of work

Shelf firing is based on a standard kiln shelf (approximately 520mm).
All pieces must fit comfortably on one shelf with safe spacing.

Final placement and loading are determined by the studio.

  • Firings are scheduled based on kiln availability and workload.

    • We do not offer guaranteed turnaround times

    • Typical turnaround is 1–3 weeks

    • During busy periods, turnaround times may be longer

Clients will be notified when work is ready for collection.

  • Only suitable materials may be fired in our kilns. Maximum temperature: 1320°C.

    This includes:

    • Clay bodies appropriate for the selected firing temperature

    • Glazes suitable for electric kilns

    • Proper application of glazes and finishes

We reserve the right to refuse work made with:

    • unknown or unsuitable clay bodies

    • experimental or hazardous materials

    • excessive glaze application

    • materials that pose a risk to the kiln or kiln furniturem description

  • We operate a rolling firing schedule.
Booked dates confirm drop-off and acceptance into the firing queue.
